The Moon, the Seasons, and the Wisdom We’ve Forgotten

We Were Never Meant to Grow in Straight Lines
So much of modern life is shaped around the idea that growth should always look like forward motion. That we should be clear, motivated, and productive, even in the depths of winter. That rest is something to earn, and pause is something to justify.
But when we look to the natural world, we see something very different. Nothing in nature grows in a straight line. There are seasons of expansion and contraction, light and dark, movement and rest. Seeds lie quietly beneath the soil long before anything is visible. Trees shed what they no longer need, not as a failure, but as part of their wisdom.
We are no different, although some of us often forget this.
This is where the Moon can become our trusted guide and offer us gentle reminder of this cyclical truth.
Each month the Moon moves through phases of darkness and illumination. When we choose to work with these rhythms, we give ourselves permission to move more honestly, and often more kindly, through our own lives.
The New Moon is a time of inward turning. It’s not about setting bold intentions or pushing ahead. It’s a quieter moment and one that invites listening rather than doing. A time to notice what has reached completion, what is ready to be released, and what might be beginning to stir beneath the surface.
The Full Moon, by contrast, brings light. It can illuminate what has been growing quietly, offering clarity, insight, and sometimes the invitation to let go of what has run its course.
Neither phase is better than the other., and both are necessary.
In a world that rarely slows down, reconnecting with cyclical rhythms can be deeply supportive, especially for our nervous systems. the Moon can remind us that rest is not a detour from growth, and that clarity often comes after stillness, not before.
At this time of year, the darkness can feel like a protective cloak. Nature itself seems to draw inward. The hedgehogs nestle down. The soil rests and nothing is in a hurry. There is a quiet wisdom here.
Like the gardener who, over a cup of tea contemplates the upcoming year and peruses their seed catalogues in the depths of winter, this is a time for gentle consideration rather than action. For noticing what we’re drawn towards, without needing immediate results. For trusting that strong roots are forming, even if we can’t see them yet.
This is why I’ve begun creating a series of New Moon and Full Moon offerings. A series of gentle reflections and simple rituals designed to support awareness, embodiment, and integration through the year.
The January New Moon on Sunday 18th marks a particularly tender threshold. This is a moment between what has been shed and what has not yet taken form. If you feel drawn to working with this quieter phase of the cycle, I’ve created a free New Moon reflection you’re welcome to explore.
It’s offered as a companion rather than a practice to complete. Nothing to get right. Nothing to push. Just an invitation to pause, listen, and allow the cycle to support you in its own time.
If you feel drawn to working with this quieter phase of the cycle, you’re warmly invited to receive the January New Moon reflection by joining Living in Rhythm with the Moon below.
Looking ahead to the Full Moon…
This New Moon Reflection marks the beginning of an ongoing series of lunar offerings that I’ll be sharing across the year. These reflections will occasionally be woven into my yoga workshops, including the Festival of Awakening at the Full Moon on Saturday 31st January, where we’ll explore similar themes of release, clarity, and renewal through yoga, breath-work, ritual, sound and stillness.

While future lunar reflections will carry a small investment, those who attend the workshop will receive the accompanying lunar offering as part of the experience, -allowing the work to continue gently beyond our time together.
With much love and best wishes,
Alison
