Yoga Shala Etiquette

  • Please arrive promptly and quietly 5-10 minutes before your class is due to start so that we can start on time, doors open 15 minutes before each class.  If you arrive late you are still welcome but please come in as quietly as possible to avoid disturbing others.

  • Please switch off mobile phones and leave them with your personal belongings in the porch area. If you prefer you can lock them in your car.

  • Please remove your shoes before entering the main Shala area.

  • Please do your best to avoid treading on other peoples mats.

  • Tell your teacher about any injuries.

  • If you feel pain or discomfort at any time stop and inform the teacher.

  • Be mindful of your personal hygiene. This advice is in relation to both ends of the spectrum. Firstly, please make sure that you, your clothes and your mat are clean. Secondly, please avoid heavy perfumes, oils, strong smelling deodorants and antiperspirants.  These intense scents can travel easily during class especially in a small space, and it is possible for them to irritate others when practicing deeper breathing practices.  Some people also have serious sensitivities or allergies.

  • If you've borrowed equipment please return it to its rightful place or place it so it can be stored back easily. Leaving your space as clean as you found it is respectful to the Shala and students in later classes.

  • Please leave the room quietly after your class as some people use that time for quiet meditation.

  • Be respectful of the teacher, to the other students in the class and to yourself. Everyone who comes to Alison Foster Yoga is welcome and deserves to practice yoga free from judgment, from harm, from exclusion or from anything else that would keep them from feeling comfortable in the space they are in. If at any time this isn't the case please inform Alison Foster Yoga with details.
